Sleep Apnea Treatment

Snoring is easy to dismiss — but it deserves a closer look. In many cases, snoring is more than a nighttime nuisance. It can be a sign of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), a condition in which the tongue, jaw, or the weight of the neck causes the airway to close off during sleep. The result: breathing that stops and starts throughout the night, quietly taking a toll on your overall health over time. Both snoring and sleep apnea can often be treated effectively with a custom dental appliance or CPAP — though an accurate diagnosis from a sleep specialist is an important first step when OSA is suspected. Severe cases may require coordinated care with a sleep specialist. Whatever your situation, we'll walk you through a thorough consultation to help you find the right path forward. Potential health effects of untreated obstructive sleep apnea include: • Drowsy driving • High blood pressure • Increased stroke risk • Weight gain People at higher risk for OSA may also have: • Obesity (BMI > 35) • Type 2 diabetes • History of stroke • High blood pressure requiring more than 2 medications • Pulmonary hypertension Common symptoms: • Excessive daytime sleepiness • Snoring • Insomnia • Nightmares • Loud breathing during sleep • Dry mouth or throat • Morning headaches • Irritability There are two forms of sleep apnea worth understanding. Central sleep apnea originates in the brain — faulty signals to the muscles during sleep — and typically requires a specialist's care. Obstructive sleep apnea is far more common, and it's frequently treatable right here in our office. Treatment Oral appliance therapy is the most widely used and effective approach for obstructive sleep apnea. With more than 80 devices available today, these custom-fit appliances — similar in appearance to a double retainer — work by either repositioning the lower jaw forward or holding the tongue in place to prevent it from collapsing into the throat. Worn at night and precisely fitted to each patient, they're a comfortable, non-invasive solution worth exploring.
