More than half of U.S. adults have gingivitis. Left unaddressed, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis — and from there, into a range of health problems that extend well beyond your mouth. The signs are worth knowing: bleeding, swelling, persistent bad breath, discomfort, receding gums, and eventually, tooth loss. But gum disease doesn't stop at your gumline. Your oral health is the foundation of your overall health — and when gum disease takes hold, the consequences can reach much further. When gums bleed, the bacteria living in the deep pockets between your teeth and gums can enter your bloodstream. That pathway has been linked to serious systemic conditions, including: Stroke · Heart Disease · Respiratory Disease · Diabetes · Osteoporosis · Arthritis · Ulcers · Pre-Term Births Periodontal treatment typically begins with controlling the infection — most often through scaling and root planing, a thorough deep cleaning that clears buildup from the root surface. Depending on what we find, we may also recommend specific toothpastes or rinses, or prescribe antibiotics to address infection directly. The most advanced cases may require a surgical approach. We assess your gum health at every six-month visit. If you've noticed bleeding, tenderness, or persistent bad breath, tell us — we'd rather know early. Together, we'll determine the right path to restore your gums and protect the health that depends on them.
